WARNING: AVEDA GREEN SCIENCE FIRMING FACE CREAM IS MAKING MY LIFE MISERABLE

In an attempt to get off the greatest/most expensive face cream in the entire universe, I have been playing around with cheaper options.  I go from Creme de la Mer which is over $200 for the jar which lasts about 2 months to Oil of Olay which is about $17 for the same amount of time.  Thanks to the lady at Wal-Mart who checked me out the other day, I now know that their brand, Equate, was the same exact formula for $8.  I didn't tell her I was coming down off a product high and felt like I was scraping the bottom of the barrel with Oil of Olay and wasn't going down any deeper to Equate.  You may tell me that it is just as good, but I'm taking baby steps here.  Work with me.  My husband decides he's going to help because he doesn't like to see me suffer, and while he is getting his hair cut, picks up the Aveda Green Science Firming Face Cream.  OMG.  I now have hives all over my face and neck.  Little blistering bumps that make you feel like you are either going to cry from the pain, or tear apart your face from the itching.  As a bonus, it also sparked a cold sore as well.  I would take a picture, but I'm way too vain to have it out there.  Now, I've used Aveda hair products for 20 years, and use the body soap everyday as well so I'm used to their products.  You know, "The Art and Science of Pure Flowers and Plant Essences."  Or hives.  Whichever.

I went to the doc in a box today and have a prescription for steroids.  He didn't think it would scar.  Great.  I can't exercise for 2-3 days and have to continue to take Benadryl, which makes me sleepy as soon as I pull the box off the shelf.  I break open the blister pack and I better be standing 3 feet at most away from a sleeping surface because I am out.

Just a friendly consumer warning from someone who is tied to the house.  Do not use the Aveda skin care cream.

Your hubby can return the product from wherever he bought it.

Like, I am currently unemployed and looking for a way to wean myself off my luxury products for the duriation. I had a meltdown at the dermatologist and he suggested Cetaphil "Gentle Skin Cleanser" and moisturizer for "Dry Sensitive Skin" as a basics - I've been very happy. He also recommended Neutragena product line. Some of the Olay have been good too, it's the "old lady" scent that turn me off sometimes.

I am currently experiencing the same thing! How long had you used the cream before the "rash" appeared? I'd been using it for about 2 weeks. How long before the "rash" goes away ? ! ? It's so uncomfortable and embarassing!

Anonymous said...

I have experienced the same problems. I started using the Firming Face Cream on a Friday by Sunday a rash started to develop on my forehead and has now extended to my whole face and chest. I have had the rash now for 5 days with no signs of it abeiting. It would be nice if anyone out there that has experienced similar problems could advise on best course of action or for how long the rash will last. My rash doesn't particuarly itch.

OMG, I thought I was the only one allergic to that cream. My face is super-red and it itches like crazy. I've been using cetaphil cleanser and lotion until it gets better.

ugh, same thing happened to me! I just got a free sample of it a few weeks ago and used it once right after that without any problem. Last night after my shower I used it again, and this morning I woke up feeling just a little bit itchy near my eyebrow, but I kind of ignored it. Well, now it's 2 pm and I've been progressivly itchy. Took a look in the mirror and I have a fine, red rash all over my face. This is no good!

I have NEVER had an allergic reaction in my LIFE...until I used the Green Science Firming Face Cream. The first time I got the rash I was on an antibiotic and thought it was from that but apparently I was wrong because now, a few weeks later, I put on the cream again and by the end of the night I had an itchy red rash all over my face and it's dry and flaky and it's driving me nuts! I don't know what to do about it :(

I purchased Aveda's Green Science Firming Cream 3 weeks ago and noticed some redness on my forehead and cheeks initially but didn't experience any itching until Easter Sunday. The rash became worse and other parts of my body began itching but didn't display any rash. I've started taking Benedryl, and I'm using Caladryl Clear lotion on my face to help with the itching. I have the same problem with Benedryl that Melissa has (drowsiness), so I can't take it unless I plan on sleeping for a couple of hours.

Me too! I started using Aveda lotion just to try something new. After two weeks have a very fine, bumpy, red rash all over my face. It feels like my skin is swollen. Initially I thought it was a reaction to sunscreen but now with all the other comments I know it's the aveda lotion.

I posted an earlier comment on 4/14 and would like to add that an ingredient in the face cream called Aragan Oil is also in Moroccan Oil products. I was using the Moroccan Oil on my hair by the advice of my stylist. So just be aware that this ingredient may be causing the negative reaction. Read all labels on new products before using.

I have used Aveda hair products for years and love them, but two days ago I used a sample of Green Science Firming Face Cream. The first day my skin felt wonderful. The second day, I broke out in a red and painful rash over my face. My skin is puffy and very rough, like a burn. This after only the second use. I think it'll have to heal like a burn and may peel. I recommend NOT USING this product!

Anonymous said...

Yep, same exact thing here. Used the Green Science cream for 3 days and now have red itchy bumps on my forehead, cheeks, along my hairline and neck. My face is usually as clear as a bell and I've never had an allergic reaction to a cream or cleanser. This product should be pulled because obviously its affecting a lot of people. :( Threw my bottle out and have been applying a little aloe and cucumber (homemade)mix to my face and it reduced the itching and redness a bit. The bumps are hideous. :(

At a hotel in Savannah I tried the sample Aveda in our room and itched my arms to death all the way home to KY.not knowing what the culprit was bought a bottle of Aveda lotion at the store at our mall and after using it came down with hives all over my body which I had for 2 months before they went went away with the help of prescriptions.I am going to contact the FDA about this lousy product.

After getting a facial at my local Aveda Salon, I bought 3 new products just to try something new. I had been using Clinique for years and wanted to change up my old routine. I bought the Aveda Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser, the Botanical Kinetics Exofliant and the All Sensitive Moisturizer. After 2 applications of this 3 step regime, my face is completely burned. It is red, swollen, covered with bumps that are now turning into white blister/pimples. There is a burning sensation and the only relief I have is from placing an ice pack on my face. I am starting to feel a little relief on the 3rd day of this reaction. I will definitely be going back to my trusty Clinique 3 Step regime. This is awful. I haven't left my house in 3 days.

Incredible!! How on earth did Aveda get away with releasing this product when this what happens to people! I had the same experience as everyone here...horrendous red, bumpy rash all over my face and decolletage due to a tester I was given of the Green Science Firming serum when buying their shampoo. At first I thought it was Rubella as a friend of mine's kid had it. I had only used the cream twice when it developed. I got rid of the rash by scrubbing my face clean twice daily, using pure jojoba oil and waited it out. It took about 4-5 days to go away. I wouldn't recommend steroid creams personally as I think it's just adding to the problem, using another strong product. Do not use this product- something is seriously wrong with it for this many people to react. I might add, I do not suffer from any allergies, am in great health and I never suffered any skin problems in my life before this incident. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

I've been using the Aveda Green Science products for several weeks now and have not had any of the symptoms or problems mentioned on this blog. No rash. No itching. No redness. I really, really like the products. It stinks to hear that so many of you are having an adverse reaction to these products.

i have been using aveda products since 2001. i recently became aware of the green science line about three weeks ago. i have been very pleased with the serum, eye cream, and moisturizer plan and use it morning and night. none of the issues have come up that have been described above. i must add that people that have never used aveda products will have some issues in changing their skin line to aveda because you are simply changing using chemicals to mostly plant based products. your skin will have reactions solely due to this and getting rid of all the chemicals it is used to. i recommend people looking to switch from any other cosmetic line to aveda to start off with the sensitive line and then work towards what your skin needs - whether it is the normal botanicals line, the tourmaline line (my favorite), or the green science line which i really love. once you have made the breakthrough to treating your skin to plant-based products rather than chemicals and synthetics, you will be happy. the same thing with their shampoos, colonges, hair products. you may be hyper-sensitive at first but that is just a normal immunological reaction of your body adjusting from being forced to live with chemicals and synthetics to being surrounded with plant-based products.

I have used Aveda hair products for years and have never had a reaction. Then, I received a sample of the Aveda Green Science Firming Face Cream. I used it for 2 days only. On the second day I woke up with an itchy, red feeling on my cheeks. Over the rest of my face I see tiny "invisible" bumps. Thankfully, I have not developed a severe painful rash like some of you. I do wish to know, however, that for those of you who have similar symptoms as myself, how long did it take to go away? Did you need to see a doctor? It appears as though some of bumps on my face are starting to dry up on their own. The tiny invisible bumps seem to be filled with clear liquid so I popped a small area to see if this will dry up on it's own. Any thoughts from anyone? Thanks!

Oh my gosh - I purchased Online - direct from Aveda) the Green Science lifting serum, eye cream and firming moisterizer. Now, I have very small bumps (thousands of tiny bumps!) all over the lower part of my face and ALL over my neck and all over my decollete/chest!!!!!! (I have never had a reaction like this to cosmetics - ever. Ever. It doesn't itch - nor is threr redness - just thousands of bumps. I will call customer service and tell them, but I am a bit freaked out by this.

Don't they test their products?

I asked my husband to "Look what's happening to my throat!!" He asked if I got poison oak from holding our cat. He said . . but, "it doesn't quite look like poison oak." What are you doing different - it looks like an allergic reaction - he was puzzled . . . then, ding dong - Aveda!

I love their smoothing conditioner - but this particular skin care line is a not good for the skin.

I am in my second day of allergic reaction to Aveda's Green Science product and it is worse than yesterday. My face has blown up and the skin is rough, red and itchy! I am a fan of some of Aveda's other make up products but this cream should obviously be taken off the market. I have tried practically every face cream and product, so I'm not the type that has sensitive skin that reacts to things. This is a first and as you say it is NOT FUN!!

I just started using the Aveda line on Monday to try it out. I've been using the Botanical Kinetics line. I've had a swollen red line across my right cheek pop up, my face is puffy as well as red &/or itchy. Anyone else experience this with the Botanical line?

Anonymous said...

I went to a Aveda spa and got a great facial. They ARE supposed to be the top, right? Because of the results, I purchased the Green Science firming face and eye creams, as well as a mask. After several days of use, I also had red welts, severe itching and my face was swollen. My husband asked me what was happening with my face. Benedryl worked somewhat to alleviate the pain, by I was sleepy all the time. I kept using the cream until I realized, "DUH!" and once I washed it well with Caswell Massey almond soap, and used some Aveeno soothing oil, it is slowly going away. Who would have thought this product could do this? I'm back to Oil of Olay!

I have experienced an allergic reaction after only 2 applications. My face is burning, itchy and has bumps all over it. I have sensitive skin and looked at their sensitive skin care but that contains parabens which is what I avoid. Guess I need to do some more research to try and figure out what ingredient caused this reaction. I am not particularly loyal to one line,I like to try new things periodically and have never suffered a reaction. I have used Aveda shampoos and conditioners and like them. As far as their marketing, I don't buy their products because of the organic ingredients, I just liked what I used so far. I will not be using any of their product again. If people are buying product because of their marketing, do some research. Who knows what percentage of organic ingredients are used. I do suggest a site called safecosmetics.org, lots of useful information there. I will be looking at that again, and sticking to tried and true products.
One thing for sure, I am getting a refund!
I will try Cetaphil lotion and cleanser for now, I've used them before. Very gentle. I will get some allergy medication too.
How long before this rash goes away?

Check out this review...
http://thegreenbeautyguide.com/?p=129

It comments on how the Green Line products have so little organic ingredients that they did not seem to be able to qualify for the EDFA certification. Also It has MANY chemical products... but the way the box is printed, you have to look for them.

An I am usually a fan of Aveda. But not on this!

Wish I had read the comments before buying Aveda Green Science skin care. After starting with a red bumpy rash on my face which turned into major swelling which closed both my eyes I went to hospital. At this point no one could tell what was the cause. I was about to start a long road of allergy tests when it dawned on me that the only new thing in the past week to enter my life was the cream. it is a relief to find that others have had problems with this range. Why is it still on the shelves?

Hi Ladies as a working Aveda consultant I am really suprised at all the comments. I will say that there are a few major issues at play here...1) are you using any other product line while using the creme? 2) Is it possible that the cactus thats in the ingredients is the cause of the rash as alot of people are and can be allergic to this. and 3) have any of you contacted Aveda directly? If you havent then I suggest you do. They are always looking to hear the good and bad that comes with having a wide variety of products. Please take those into consideration and see what happens. I am on my fifth year of using their skin care and I have not had one reaction and I have super sensitive skin. Good Luck!

I bought a lot of the Green Science products last week, thought I would use the samples first. My reaction is the same as many I have read. I used it in the evening, the cleanser and cream. Woke up with a hive covered face and neck. My eyes were almost swollen shut. Couldn't believe that this product could have caused such a reaction, so I used it one more time and it got worse. So I only used it twice. Will not use it again and didn't use it with any other products, washed my face with the cleanser and put the cream on. I emailed Aveda yesterday and have not received a reply. I have NEVER had a reaction to ANY cosmetic, cleanser, or cream. I will be taking or sending every Aveda product I bought back and will not be using Aveda products again. The only thing I can compare my reaction to is a terrible case of poison ivy I got a number of years ago. It's that bad! My daughter said she would try it and see if she had a reaction, but it's not worth the risk. It is not worth the risk for anyone to use the Green Science products by Aveda. After reading all the reactions to this product, I can't believe Aveda is still sending out samples. I hope I don't scar. My face is better today-day 4. My face and neck are still broken out, my eyes are still swollen, it is drying out and feels more like a burn. I will continue to use the products I have used for years and won't be trying anything new. It is not worth it!!

Help! So glad (and shocked) to find this blog. I am also a long-time and exclusive Aveda user, both hair and face products. This green science creme has absolutely wrecked my face. After only 3 uses, I am red, itchy, dry and covered with sandpaper-like hives on my face, neck and ears. Can't sleep and tons of pain, plus I'm about to scratch my skin off. Nothing like this has ever happened to me. To make matters worse, I'm on vacation and have no doctor here. I'm taking OTC meds and trying to make it through. Aveda, do something!!!

It was comforting to me to find this site about Aveda Green Science Firming Cream. Because like all the other posts, I had an extreme allergic reaction from this cream. I never had an allergic reaction from a face cream before. Day 2 of using the cream, I noticed small red bumps on my forehead. I thought it was from the cream, but at this point it wasn't a concern. The next day though, my entire face was one big red mess. Small disgusting bumps all over my face, and down my neck, where I didn't even apply the cream. My face felt like it was burning and my eyes and face were all swollen. I was extremely MISERABLE! I couldn't sleep, missed 3 days of work, my house and family went neglected and on top of it Thanksgiving was 3 days away. This is the scoop, to all the other victims of this face cream. I had to go to the dermatologist. He prescribed Desonide ointment. I had to use ice packs on my face to relieve the pain. I took Benadryl and Advil for pain relief. It has been a week now, the bumps are almost gone, but my face is still reddish and sensitive. To me it seems like it will take 2 weeks for my skin to be back to balance. I can wear no make-up, do my hair because my face is a greasy mess. I take cold showers and can not exercise. I called Aveda and complained and will be getting a refund. But the product does work for people and they will not pull the product. I'm sorry for anyone else who is going through this horror. But your skin will clear up eventually and you probably won't scar. Keep your face moisturized and drink a lot of water and don't worry. I hope this information helps.

I used the Green Science Firming Cream for the first time last night. I woke up this morning with a red swollen burning face full of lumps. I had to go to work today looking like a cabbage patch doll!! (If anyone remembers them!!) I feel like I've fallen face first into a ditch of sting nettles!! My face is still burning like mad tonight. I have emailed Aveda today. There is something seriously wrong with this cream. I will update on any reply I receive!!

Thank you for this blog. I had been using the Aveda Green Science firming face cream sample for two weeks now. A couple of days ago, I developed a rash and it got progressively worse. This morning, my I was so flushed and my face was burning up, I had to leave work. I went to the doctor, who concluded it looked like an allergic reaction to something. I came home and goggled, aveda allergic reaction, and was so glad to find this.

The doctor recommended hydrocortisol cream and benadryl. Why don't any of the reviews of this product on Aveda's website have any of our horrible rash experiences? Sure makes you suspicious. I will not be using any of their products again.

Pricie (UK) said...

The rash does calm down after a few days. I was in agony on Saturday but it was better on Sunday. I'm now left with a kind of rough scaley skin but at least the swelling has gone down. I still have not received any acknowledgement from Aveda I will email them again tomorrow.

I, too am having the exact same reaction. Initially, I thought it was from their purifying gel cleanser, and discontinued use of it. It took 2 weeks for the reaction to go away the first time. Last night I used the Firming Face Cream sample I had, since I thought it was safe, and now I realize that's what gave me the terrible, itchy red burning rash the first time. I can't imagine going through another 2 weeks of this, especially over Christmas! I called Aveda, and got got their typical "this particular line is very 'active' (whatever that means), and it may take your face awhile to adjust to the natural ingredients". Oh, give me a break! I only use all natural skincare, such as Mychelle, Dr. Hauschka, 100% Pure and Karen Sayer. Aveda is a major step down for me! For years I've used Aveda hair care products, but I'm so disappointed in this that I plan to discontinue use of all of their products from now on.

Hi - I called Aveda about this line after going through hell with the allergic reaction the Green Science product gave me. The whole experience was horrible and I NEVER want to go through that again. I am leaving a number to the women I spoke with at Aveda Headquarters. Her name is Kelly Anderson, she is the customer relations manager. Her number is 1-763-951-4886. She was helpful and they seem to be taking this matter seriously. Who knows for sure. But return the product and get a full refund. She also said that any doctor bills that were incurred, Aveda would pay for those too. With proper documentation needed. I hope this helps.

I'm a 55-year old woman and I just had a facial at the local spa. This time I purchased some of their products. Two days later, I woke up with hives all over my face. I brought the product back and the aethetician gave me a soothing cream. The next day, I WAS MUCH WORSE!! I am now on cortico-steroids, have been given two intra-muscular injections, and am still feeling lousy.

After reading the posts here, I checked the ingredients of both products I used -- both contain aragon oil!!

So, what I did to myself was expose myself to an allergen, have an allergic reaction, and then expose myself again! The second (or any subsequent) exposure to an allergen invoke a much more severe response. (At least we know my immune system is working.)

I'm a little better after 3 days of treatment by my doctor.

My advice to everybody is this --
* it's not uncommon for us to develop allergies througout our lives, especially in our 40s and 50s;
* See a REAL doctor, an MD, preferably an internist and/or dermatologist and/or allergist;
* don't assume that natural ingredients are better than synthetics. That's a myth. An allergy is an allergy. Nothing's more natural than the venom inside a bee, and yet a bee sting can kill some of us.

Best of luck for everyone's recovery.

Yes - I wish I had seen these comments also. I was so excited to try Aveda Green Science products because the ingredients sounded so nourishing for my skin. After two uses of the cleanser and moisturizer I broke out in hives - my face is red and puffy and is covered with itchy bumps. It was so embarrassing because it was New Years Eve and I looked horrible for the party that was at our house. And then the next day I had to go in to NYC to see Wicked, a special family event where tickets had been purchased long before, looking a mess.

I too am experiencing same problem. On second day of use of Aveda Green Science Face Firming Cream, my face is very bumpy, red, swollen, itchy and hot. It's been 24 hours since I last used it...how long does it take to go away??? I have been using Aveda products for years myself and never a reaction like this. It's horrible.

Okay, first of all...the person who wrote that "people that have never used aveda products will have some issues in changing their skin line to aveda because you are simply changing using chemicals to mostly plant based products" doesn't have a clue! Like so many others, the itchy, painful rash that appeared after use #1 of the trial firming face cream is a little more than "an issue"...it is misery! I will take my chemicals over any plant-based product if this is the result I can expect. We should all have the opportunity to flog the creator of this product at least once.

Aveda Green Science = Hives
I've used many Aveda hair and skin products for over 20 years, I've also used commerical products with lots of chemicals, this my first massive reaction. After a wonderful custom facial (not green science) at the Aveda Institute I purchased the Green science face ream and eye cream to combat the signs of aging. I used the creams morning and night for two days, on the third day I woke with some blotchiness and itching, that night broke into hives that covered my face and neck, by day four i looked like I was recovering from a car accident: eyes swollen shut, lips puffed up like a duck bill, red, blotchy, HOT and ITCHY! My MD will prescribe a steriod cream which should address all symptoms, the irony is I was trying to "go natural." I took photos and plan to show them to the shop and request a refund as soon as I'm comfortable going out in public.

I use Aveda hair products regularly, and I am always trying new products on my face. I do not have sensitive skin at all. When I tried a sample of this cream it was great for the first 2 times, and the 3rd time I used it I could feel underneath my eyes were itchy throughout the day. When I looked in the mirror they were puffed up. I immediately washed my face. When I woke up the next day my face was full of tiny itchy red little bumps. My skin was a disaster for a week (until the bumps eventually faded away). Do NOT trust this product! who knows what is in it to cause such a mess. I will never purchase Aveda products again.

All of the above has just happened to me. Red, hot, tight, itchy, blotchy and bumpy facial skin, exactly where I cleansed, toned and moisturised - and this was day 1 of home use after an in-store counter spa facial on Saturday. I've never had a reaction to a skin product before, this is scary. Plus this stuff is not cheap. I never had a problem with the Aveda Tourmaline range, it's this Green Science. To the Doctor tomorrow if it's not improved overnight and then I will try for a refund. I want this product out of the house.

I'm glad to finally learn what has caused this horrible reaction! I couldn't figure out what the heck causing this horrible rash all over my face until I did my search on the web. I only tried the sample of Aveda's Green Science lifting serum once and what a horrible reaction. My face is swollen, red, hot and itches! I too am taking the Benedryl but it doesn't seem to relieving much. I actually called in sick to work today (thank goodness it's Friday) as not to scare everyone away! This product needs to be removed from the shelves!

I used the Aveda all sensitive moisturized ONE time while on vacation and a couple of hours later felt itchy. Now three days later my neck is swollen and solidly red, my eyes are swollen, I have a rash everywhere. I had to have a shot and buy expensive drugs to combat this problem. I hope it goes away. PLEASE warn everyone you know!

I use Aveda everything, and I recently decided to switch from the Botanical Kinetics to the Green Science. I was shocked to get a red pimply ITCHY rash just like the rest of you guys - I've never reacted to anything in my life, ever. That was six months ago. Last week, I tried it again, with the same disastrous results. This time, I got so puffy in the face that I couldn't go to work. My fault though. I knew I was allergic and I still used it. Whoops! I just wish I knew exactly which ingredient I'm reacting to - I have the same reaction to the Aveda Enbrightenment range.

I can't believe how many people have reacted to the Aveda Green Science line. I was at a Spa (St. Annes in Grafton, ON Canada) with my Mother this past weekend and she had the Aveda Green Science Facial. Soon after her facial, she was ithcy and sore all over her face and neck. She said it felt like a very painful and itchy sunburn. She had little red bumps and now her eyes have become extremely puffy - like pools of water under her eyes.
Has anyone contacted Aveda about this? I can't understand why they have not pulled the Green Science products from their line as clearly people are suffering. Something should be done to stop anyone else from going through this.

I have been using Aveda skin care products for the last 3 years. I bought the larg 16.9 fl oz of my moisturizer, botanical kinetics. About 1/4 of the way through it my eyes started getting red and swallon. I got through about 1/2 of the bottle before I realized my red itchy face was caused by the product I had been using for over a year. I must have developed an allergy or my immune system finally gave in to it.

I have used the Aveda Tourmaline Eye cream in the past. I was told that it was being discontinued, and they gave me a sample of the Green Science eye cream. I am 40 years old, have had no allergies my entire life, and my eyes are now totally red, itchy and with hives!!! I went back to the store, and the woman (with an attitude) told me "what do you want me to do about it?" Basically telling me it's my allergic reaction, she's not a doctor, and she can't do anything about it. I spend a small fortune for Aveda products - hair and skin - and this is the answer I get? I am writing a letter to Aveda, explaining how they have just lost a customer. This is no way to treat your customers.

I had a facial at an Aveda spa in Houston, TX, and experienced the same results almost immediately--hives on my forehead, swollen eyelids, and severe redness below my eyes and on my cheeks from the Green Science products. My face is very dry, and red, but beginning to get better. I've been rinsing with cold water and only using Cetaphil Moisturizer. Hopefully will continue to get better--still very rough and dry. I'm contacting Aveda too! Glad I found this website!

I just had a facial on Saturday at my favorite Aveda salon in New Braunfels, TX and had the same reaction all of you experienced. I don't know what lotions and creams were used, but it really scared me when my eyes started to puff up. It took a full day to develop the rash. I'm glad I stumbled across this site. This is the first bad reaction I have had to the products.

I have sensitive skin. I generally used minimal products and makeup, most of the time just 100% aloe gel. As I've gotten older, I've started using a moisturer. I just started with the new Aveda Green Science line. I love it! The first couple days my face was a little tingly when putting on the serum before the cream. I attribute that to the gentle exfoliation in the product. Now my face feels super soft and the fines lines have been minimized. I freaked when I saw this blog, wondering if something would happen later. Well, I'm on day 10 and everything going well. I do use moroccan oil for my hair, so I knew I wouldn't be allergic to that. There are so many ingredients, I guess the risk of being allergic to one is elevated.

Yeah, so the same thing just happened to me. I have tried all the over the counter stuff and it seemed like they weren't doing as great as they could be. So I break down and go to the Aveda store. I was excited that there products were totally natural. I bought the botanical kinetics purifying creme cleanser. My face looked and felt great for two weeks after using the product. Then BAM! My face looks awful. I have red, itchy, swollen marks all over my face. I look hideous. I stopped using it and can't wait for this to be over. I called the store. She said she hadn't heard of that happening before but maybe I was allergic. Really! You think? She said to bring it in and I a can have a full refund.

ALL LYING??!!.. I wish i was!!
My 8 year old daughter used my Aveda Cream for the first time on Tuesday and now 6 days later still has swollen bumpy skin over her face and arms! I took her to the hospital today and the doctor has given her 2 types of steroid cream to try and clear it. I thought it would be kind on her skin as it was All Sensitive.

Just fond this on the Aveda website..

Does Aveda manufacture a line of products for children?

Our All-Sensitive™ products—which contain no aromas, dyes, or irritants—are perfect for children. They are pediatrician-tested, safe and effective for people aged six months and older. They are allergy- and dermatologist-tested. We do not manufacture a line of products specifically for children.

The All-Sensitive line consists of cleanser, toner, moisturiser and a body formula, which is perfect for baby massage.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this or is it just my daughter??

Dear All, thanks for all the posts! I am a lover of Aveda products and have used it for several years now. Two weeks ago I went to Aveda salon and got a facial done and the esthetician put the cream after a applying the serum. I liked the smell and feel so much that I asked for the product and bought it. On Easter Sunday I put the creme on my face and it started to feel itchy about 1/2 an hour later. I ignored it thinking that I was imagining. When the itch increased I removed the creme off of my face and splashed my face with cold water. The following morning my face was red with rash on my forhead, checks and chin and it felt itchy all over my face and at random all over my body. It got worse on tuesday and today the redness has subsided a little bit but the itch is still there. My face feels dry and the skin feels like fine sandpaper. My faith in Aveda products did not even allow a suspicion in my mind that the rash could be due to Aveda creme. In fact from the past 2 days I was worried that the rash looked like 'butterfy rash' which is common in Lupus. So much so that I left a message with my PCP that the rash looks like butterfly rash and I need an appt immediately. My friends tried to calm me down that it could be due to the creme but I would not hear it since I did not have a problem with Aveda before. Today when I read the posts I am convinced that it is due to the product. People who love Aveda need to report their experiences to the customer service since negative feedback sometimes is helpful to a company that strives for good quality products. I don't believe that Aveda does lab testing and hence these experiences would provide a good feedback! I know I am going to report it now! Good luck to everyone on this post!

I am so glad I have found this site.
After taking the Aveda Green Science Firming Face Cream I had hives on my face with small red bumps and swollen eyes. To make sure it was this product I applied a small amount for 2 consecutive days on my forearm and had the same reaction. If anyone can tell me what ingredient is causing this I would be grateful.

Anonymous said...

I use that cream - no reaction - and love it! I need just a tiny amount and it takes away all feeling of dryness. I would be devastated if it was discontinued....but it sounds like it's pretty risky if so many are allergic....nnoooooo!

Oh boy am I glad to have found this site. I had my first [and only] Aveda facial this past Wednesday and purchased the Green Science products used. The next day I was "dry" but thought this was a typical reaction..Thursday night I started to notice more puffiness and discontinued use of the products..by Friday I was puffy and my skin bumpy....by Saturday morning my eyes were swollen shut!!!!! I called the salon and left them a message at 8:15 am....by 12:30 after no callback I sent them an email. NO RESPONSE. After taking benedryl, ice packs to the face, and asprin, I finally called my doc who put me on prednisone. My sister was so angry she called the owner of the salon and left her a message....It is Sunday and still no callback. This morning I was just as puffy but that has subsided and now I'm just itchy, red, tired and MAD! I missed a whole Memorial Weekend of activities including seeing "Wicked" with my sisters. I WILL be speaking with Aveda...

A follow up from my post yesterday. The salon called me and had inadverantly failed to change their message machine to state they were closed on Saturday. The owner and manager could not have been nicer and were mortified of my experience. They quickly called Aveda for me and I have been speaking to their representative. So far all they [corp ofc of Aveda] have offered is to refund me the price of the products. Will keep you posted.

I hope the person who wrote that we were all liars would be covered in this rash and puffiness. My sister works at Aveda and gave me this cream to try. I woke up the next morning looking like I had been crying for a month because my face was so swollen. PLUS, my face was covered in those little bumps...all the way down my neck. The 6 Benadryl pills I took didn't do anything. I got a Benadryl shot today from the doctor because it was worse the second day. I am devestated and embarassed about how I look. This product is dangerous to our health and incurring a lot of medical bills for Aveda customers. I am now putting a steroid creme on my face in hopes that this will go away before my vacation this coming week.

Add me to the list of people with an allergic reaction. I used it last night and woke up with a red, splotchy, puffy face. Luckily, I don't have it as bad as some of you do. I've been putting some cold packs on it and have used Cetaphil lotion also. Oddly, enough, I don't have a reaction to the Green Science eye cream, only the face firming cream. There has got to be an ingredient in the face cream that is absent in the eye cream. Hopefully, it will be better tomorrow.

I have always been blessed with clear skin. I use mac products on the regular and only ever use ponds make up wipes to remove make up at night, with water. I recently went to south beach and had an AMAZING facial by Bliss. I bought their prodocts and misplaced them. So I asked my good friend who has previously graduated from the aveda school here in Charlotte nc, for a moistuizer so I could keep this fresh bright "glow"... She gave me, a dark green container, small, a face moisturizer. So I'm pretty sure that's the product everyone is talking about. Well I used to before bed and I woke up with tiny tiny bumps alllll over face and neck, they itch, not horribly, not really red unless I irritate them, anyways this is day 4 and they are still here, July forth next week and vacation the following week! Help. What can I do to make this go away? Do nothing??? Go to a Dermo??? Use a gentle cleanser???

I have been using Aveda products for over 20 years and recently purchased the Green Science firming face cream. I have never had such a reaction on my face in my life. My eyes were puffy & swollen - I looked like I had no eye lids, my face was red, itchy & burning. I looked (& felt) like I fell asleep in the sun for 12 hours. I love Aveda but I will never use Green Science again. I'm sorry to hear about all the reactions all of you also experienced but at least I know it is not just me. I am curious to know which ingredient I am obviously allergic to. I have no known (previous) allergies to any food or plant or chemical but I guess I do now.

I had a facial yesterday at an Aveda Concept salon using the Green Science line. I left with red, burning skin. I won't do that again!

I'm curious if anyone else that has been troubled by the Aveda Green Science products has sensitivities to shellfish. I see that glucosamine is one of the ingredients. I know I can't take glucosamine as a supplement, I never thought to look for it in a list of skin care product ingredients. It's in the Green Science line and I think it might be what I reacted to.

Had the same reaction as others have mentioned above. The best equivalent to this disaster is poison ivy...red swollen itchy face with puss. My eyes were really swollen too. I started to take zrytec because I became to groggy with Benadryl. It is getting better but I am also applying cortisone cream before bed. I am scared to death that this will scar. Anyways...just wanted to add to the list so that others searching for info when there face is hot red and itchy know they are not alone.

My reaction to this product was extremely serious, and resulted in me being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. The puffiness and swelling in my face became so severe that i actually fainted and had to be taken to the hospital for fear of anaphylaxis. The severity of my reaction caused extreme emotional stress, physical discomfort and great concern, not to mention an enormous hospital bill for the ambulance and the multitude of tests that resulted. Oddly enough, it took almost a year for me to figure out that the cause of my allergic reaction was the green science face cream. I have only used it twice in my life. Once was two days before i was rushed to the hospital with a massively swollen and red face, and the other time was yesterday. I am already turning red and swollen and now i know what to expect. More swelling and an increasingly angry rash over the next several days. Will have to take a strong oral steroid to bring down the swelling, and rest to avoid any fainting. The rash starts out as very red and then tiny bumps that look minaturee pustules will develop all over my face. It will take more than a week for the rash to clear up. The swelling will last until I get on the steroid. The swelling is so bad that i am unrecognizable. At least now I know what it was that caused this. I would warn anyone against using this product.

Thank you. I was about to sign up for a deal at an Aveda salon for a Green Science facial and a massage. I thought I would check out some reviews and I believe you girls have saved me from the same discomfort. I have fair sensitive skin. Perhaps I would have been ok, but I'm not taking the risk. I am so sorry to hear of your experiences, but thank you.

My face is red and cover in hives!!! I used Aveda products for 5 years and a month away I woke up with red a red spot, then two, three and you know the end. I stopped put it on. I wanted to make sure it was Aveda so I put ONE DROP on my right cheek and now all of my face is red...

Anonymous said...

I will add my comments and hope that someone who works for Aveda will read all of the posts! I love Aveda and have been using their products for years. I had never had an allergic reaction to lotions or creams, but after using the Green Science i experienced redness, burning, itching on my cheeks and forehead. Of course the salon was very happy to refund my $$$, but I am hoping they will reformulate the Green Science because obviously it isn't doing too many people any good. My aesthetician at the Aveda salon told me that quite a few people had also returned the Green Science products.

Anonymous said...

Yup. Here's another victim. I agree that whoever suggested that we were lying try out some of the face cream and see what it does. I have also experienced a severe reaction, although didn't faint! Thank goodness. I'm looking for SOLUTIONS to the problem. I've seen Cetaphil, Jojoba Oil, just plain water, keeping your face moisturized (with what?), steroids, cortizones, etc. What made it go away the fastest? I'm leaving for Christmas vacation and today it's worse than it was yesterday. Wed night-used the cream, Thursday night-noticed slight rash all over face, Friday morning woke up with really bad rash, Saturday even worse with puffy eyes! I'm just hoping it's not going to get worse. If anyone has any brilliant solutions, please tell me! I think using a steroid cream on my face is a little scary, so I'd like to go as gentle as possible. I'm so sorry you have all had to go through this like I did and I can't believe they don't AT LEAST send this product out with a Warning: People have suffered severe reactions to this product! What a pain, literally and figuratively, or maybe I should say disfiguratively!

So glad I found this post! Went in for a haircut and received a trial sample of the Green Science Firming Face Cream and also treated myself to the Mineral Tinted Moisture as my skin dries out in the Winter. Used both products and by day 2 my face and neck were covered in Hives, small bumps and totally swollen with a burning sensation. I returned the Minerial Tinted Moisture for a refund and by reading this post it must be the Green Science firming cream! I did go to the Dr. and received a prescription for Prednisone and am using Aveeno Ultra Calming Cleanser along with the Aveeno Ultra Calming lotion for sensative skin. This has been so miserable and it's Christmas tomorrow! I'm on day 2 of the steroid it has relieved the swelling and the bumps are slowly going away but this is ridiculous!

This is terrible! I bought the green science eye cream 2 nights ago. I told my husband that it would be his xmas gift to me. I've never tried any aveda products so this would be my first time using it. I applied it that night after buying it, next morning, I felt that something was wrong with my eyes, I ignored it at first them applied some again before I went to bed. Gosh, it was xmas day and my eyes looked horrible! Swollen and itchy! Never have I experienced anything like this. I was never allergic to anything and have tried different kinds of products. Will return the product immediately and hoping that my face will get better. Can anyone tell me how long this will lasts? I feel like I can't function at all!

Hi, just wanted to also say I had this exact same reaction last week to this product. Applied a sample I had received on my face and neck and within 8 hours had itching on my eyebrows. By the next morning, my face was red and swollen. By the second morning, I had thousands of tiny bumps/blisters all over my face. Went to the doctor to find I was running a fever from the reaction and was prescribed prednisone. The doctor said the reaction would not have gone away on its own. Over a week later, the bumps are finally gone but my face is still extremely dry and peeling. I reported this to the FDA, as well, as something labeled "Green Science" should never cause a reaction so severe... or a reaction, at all. I say stick with products only sold at true, non-commercial spas. I use Bioelements and have never had a problem.

RedDragonfly said...

Wow, so shocked by and sorry to hear about your terrible experiences with this cream. I've actually had the opposite effect: I'm very happy with the Green Science firming cream. I guess this shows how differently each of us reacts to different products out there... I hope that Aveda gets the message and puts a warning on their product as it seems from your testimonies that it must contain a highly potent allergen (to many). Hope you heal up soon and find a cream that suits your face.

I had a facial at an Aveda salon two nights ago and the last product used by the cosmetologist was the Green Science Firming Face Cream.
The reaction started out on my upper chest and neck and now includes my face as well. Red, raised bumps, itching, and generalized swelling. I saw a doctor and am taking prednisone tablets for 9 days to try to get rid of this reaction.

Aveda should warn customers of this potential for an allergic reaction so you can at least decide to not use it!

The rash looks horrible and feels just as bad.

Same reaction. Horrible. I used the skin brightening creme for only 2 days before my skin erupted! Red burning rash, swollen eyes, bumps and itchy. Using cortizone cream and antihistamines, but they only reduce the symptoms. I look horrible and am very uncomfortable between the itching and burning. Going back to the doctor again today. Hoping it gets better soon. Stay away from this product!

So that's what's happening to me...for over a month! Since I've never had any allergic reaction to any skin products in my life, I couldn't figure out why my face is swollen, red, and extremely itchy! This has been going on too long. I can't afford to take off from my daily responsibilities, so I go everywhere with my monster-like face and I'm so embarrassed. Unbelievable! What is in that cream!?

Anonymous said...

I decided to try the Aveda Green Science firming face creme and loved it for the first 5 days or so. Then I started noticing that my eyebrow area was getting itchy and then the rest of my face as well. I could start to see tiny little bumps and by day 7 my face was so itchy I could barely stand it. I called the company I bought it from and will be given a full refund. It has also moved down onto my neck as well and gets worse if you excercise, my face feels like it is burning afterwards. I am going to by some Benadryll today and see if that makes it any better. If not, I will go see my doctor shortly. I would not recommend this product.

Aveda Green Science Firming Face Cream has changed my life - in a good way! I've always had horribly dry, scaly skin - my mother in law had bought the cream for herself but it made her (ahem) break out- so she gave it to me - and I LOVE IT. It has softened my skin and taken away the itching. I guess I must have some weird chemistry going that it should affect everyone else so horribly, but change my skin for the better

Just got back from the doctor's office. Steriods were prescribed to help with the reaction I had to the Aveda Green Science Toner. I am 47 yrs old and have used products (expensive and less expensive) on my face for 30 years. I have never had a reaction. After the 4th use, red bumps appeared all over my face. I waited 3 days but could not handle the swelling and itchy pain. I will not buy these products again.

I am shocked after reading these posts that they go back for two years! And we are just the people that took the time to go online, search out this blog and write about our experiences. Think about how many thousands of people this has happned to. Why hasn't Aveda pulled thus product and determined what the allergen is? I hope the owner of this blog has forwarded the entire thread to Aveda. This product absolutely ruined a holiday for me as I was stuck in the mountains with no physician to see. I ended up finding a market and purchasing Benadryl, Oil of Olay and Noxema. It was the only thing that got me through.

Anonymous said...

Aye! I used the Botanical Kinetics moisturizer on my face two nights ago. Now my eyes are surrounded by a painful red and bumpy rash. Does anyone know what the allergen is? I know I'm allergic to mango skins, but I specifically checked to make sure that there were no mango products in this cream.

We should all call the FDA to complain about these Aveda products. Here are the phone numbers of the FDA's regional complaint coordinators: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/ReportaProblem/ConsumerComplaintCoordinators/default.htm
Good luck!

I too purchased the Aveda Green Science Firming Face Cream the other day...by day 2, I saw red bumps under my eye and day 3, my face and neck were disasters! i looked diseased from the rash, redness, and puffiness. I've had plenty of facials and put plenty of different products on my face and NEVER have had this happen to me!

My salon returned the item without question, and my derma gave me a steriod shot in the butt and a perscription for Cloderm. It's not day 7 and it looks like I have acne, but the rash has settled significantly. I have emailed Aveda and asked them for the ingredient list so I can compare it to the hundreds of other items I've used and had NO reaction to.

I only wish I would have read this before! And to the people that wrote that we are competitors or lying about this, um, I work in the Bakery business, thus having no ties to the face/body care business. If this product works for you, great, but I think Aveda should have a warning on the package. Good luck to everyone!

Wish I would have read this blog before I used the cream. Have tried a million different creams & never had this kind of reaction! Why is there not a huge warning on their products. Green has turned to red & that is what my face looks like! This is day two. I am swollen & have tiny blisters. It is a real set back for my skin & I am very angry.

What a disgrace. Aveda should be ashamed of itself.

I was in the Aveda store today and about to purchase the complete Green Science line (that the clerk was going on about) I told the clerk that since I have sensitive skin, I wanted to read some online consumer reviews first before I consider buying. I am SO glad I came home and read this blog. I'm not touching this crap product.

I went to an Aveda spa in Canmore, Alberta and the Green Science firming face cream was highly recommended. I used it for a couple weeks without any problems and then left on a business trip without it for a couple weeks. When I returned, I started using it again and after two days my face has become very itchy. No noticeable rash (yet) but I immediately googled "side effects of aveda green science firming cream" and found this blog. I must be slowly developing an allergic reaction to something in it. I have no known allergies but all these posts are starting to worry me. I will never use this product again.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe I found this blog and can't believe the posts go back 2 years! Have been to the doctor and had no idea what the rash was from. At 40 I have never had an allergic reaction to anything. I had been using the Green Science range for at least two weeks before I started noticing fine red bumps on my forehead, and around my nose and then my neck started breaking out in blotches. That was a week ago. Now my neck is red raw itchy and my eyes have swollen shut the last three mornings. The antihistamine I'm taking doesn't seem to be doing anything. My skin feels hard, red, raw and rough as though I have been burned. We have our 10 year wedding anniversary holiday in two days and I have never looked so bloody awful and I'm hoping this doesn't scar. I have emailed Aveda with no response as yet. Thankfully, at least I know what it is now. But I'm amazed that Aveda hasn't done anything about this given the length of time the disputes/complaints have been occurring (not even a warning on the label) and given the immense time and effort they have invested in building their brand. Someone at the top obviously isn't taking this matter seriously. You would think however given all the evidence that Aveda's lack of action may indeed be criminal.

My heart goes out to all these women who have suffered from the results of this product!!

I have use natural product a lot, although i have never used this line. I think the problem is that the aragan oil that they used was probably too strong a dose per bottle. Oils in their pure forms will cause this type of reaction.

I have used this oil in a soap form and so has my daughter(she has super sensitive skin) and nothing like this has ever happened to either of us. Aragan oil is great and would recommend it.

In an effort to pump out a new line they didn't bother to test it in a wide enough demographic.
the company has since pulled this product, that is how i found this blog.

I truly hope they do more testing befoe releasing new products and that everyone that this product hurt feels better and aveda makes amends with their customers.

Anonymous said...

I think this is a lesson for all of us. I suggest everyone first use a new product on skin other than their face for a few days first to ensure there is no allergic reaction. I've had trouble finding products that don't do what Aveda's Green Science has to so many. Oddly, I can use the Green Science with no trouble, but have problems with Bobbi Brown's night time moisturizer as well as many other products by other manufacturers. Might I suggest a Japanese company called DHC? There products are all derivatives of olive oil and work pretty well without the massive problems this product has produced.

I had this same reaction a year ago and went to the Urgent Care center to get a Benadryl shot. My sister works as a manager for Aveda and asked that I report it to their headquarters. Look for their customer service number can contact Aveda to let them know of your reaction. They even reimbursed me for my Urgent Care visit. They need to record this to maybe eventually put a warning on the bottle.

I'm really surprised this blog is 2 years old and Aveda hasn't done anything about it. I was thinking of trying it and thank heaven I found this blog.

I have been a product specialist for Aveda for 4 years now. I assure you this product has been pulled from the shelves over a year ago and they are reformulating it. Our company is made purely of natural ingredients (plant and flower essences). I myself am allergic to this product and I can completely empathize with all of you. My eyes broke out in an eczema raccoon like mask around my eyes. It was unbearable. That doesn't mean that all of Aveda skin care is infused with the same ingredients. It is simply the Green Science line and it is most likely the Argan Oil in it too. Aveda Corp is aware of the issue a long time ago and they pulled it. These things happen. Aveda is one of the most amazing companies and I am soncompletely
proud to represent it. Read their mission statement. They completely live up to exactly that they say they will.

I recently received the Aveda lotion as a Christmas gift and used it around New Years... I noticed a few bumps on my arms but i'm already allergic to some things so I just blew it off and didn't think twice about it... a few days later I re-applied the lotion to most of my body (arms, legs, back) because they still felt dry from the mild rash I had earlier that week. After applying the Aveda lotion I broke out in this horrible, itchy rash... that I would later have to go to the hospital for. I am now on steroids for 10 days along with benadryl and pepcid. I'm not sure what is in this lotion but whatever it is caused a tremendous nuisance to my life the past week, with lose of sleep and a whole lot of itching. It's a shame because I do really like Aveda products (shampoo, conditioner) but now I'm afraid to use anything because of what I just encountered.

I feel like an idiot. I've been using the Green Science eye cream for over a year, intermittently. There have been many days where I wake up and am frustrated by the puffiness of my skin in the morning, especially around the eyes (now that I think about it). I used extra Green Science eye cream last night and this morning my eyes were full-on swollen. All this time, I've been creating more wrinkles instead of hydrating my skin. This product should be taken off the shelves.

I'm also embarrassed to admit there were many nights my eyes burned after putting the cream on...but I think I just shrugged it off like it was my fault for getting it too near my eye. This stuff should NOT be eye cream if it is this irritating.

I would encourage everyone to write to the Head Scientist at Aveda, maybe even the president (Dominque Conseil). Will try to post this info soon. I'm going to do so and copy the FDA.

I have been using Aveda Green Science for the last 3 years without any problems whatsoever. My skin looks fantastic and feels fantastic. When ever I have a facial or makeup consultation the beauticians always comment on how good my skin is. I can only guess you have had an allergic reaction to the product. Aveda's customer service is brilliant and Im sure that they would be happy to check the product and offer a full refund.

I guess I'm the newest to experience the wrath of the Green Science line. After treating myself to a facial in which the Green Science line was used, I broke out in a rash...it feels and looks like a blend of poison ivy along with wasp stings. It's very itchy and because it was used on my face, neck, ears and head, my glands are swollen as well. I contacted the salon where I had this done and they admitted to me that it was the Green Science line. They also admitted that the President of Aveda reacts the same way and can't use any of the Aveda products! They did refund my $ and gave me certificates for free future services. Amazing how they're getting away with this. IF they would simply warn people or suggest a 48 hour scratch test...it would show that they're taking this seriously. I'm on day 7 of this rash...and miserable.

Like you I was using La Mer as well and loved it but finally decided the cost was just crazy. I then started using Green Science™ Firming Face Creme and have been very happy with it until I went back to get a refill only to find that it's been taken off the shelf - due to consumer outbreaks like you had. I have just a bit left and now I'm trying to figure out what night creme to use now.

Everyones skin is different. For years I used Creme No. 1 by Channel and then they changed the formula and I got whelts all over my eyes. It looked like I was 120 years old, not a pretty site.

I'm now searching for a substitute since the Aveda night creme you hate and I love is off the shelf. Any recommendations?

I don't know exactly what Aveda products were used on my feet and legs for my pedicure but for the 3rd time I have broken out in the worst rash...ever!!! I thought maybe it was just a fluke thing but now I know there is something wrong with their products. Back in January it took three weeks for my legs to get back to normal. Right now they itch sooo bad that I could spend the day scratching them and they would still itch. Not to mention as soon as water hits them it's painful. So depressing to spend all that money and be in such pain.

I have recently tried one application of AVEDA Enbrightening Correcting Serum and Creme. I have had a serious reaction: red rash over face and neck, swollen face especially around eyes, and severe discomfort and itching. I missed work today because I was embarrassed about my facial appearance.

I did not purchase the products, but asked for samples instead because I am aware I have skin sensitivity. It's unfortunate the aesthetician did not suggest trying this in a small, inconspicuous area of my skin before using it on my face.

I will be going to the dermatologist today to get a prescription for steroids to bring the symptoms under control. I will stick with my Clinique products going forward because I have never had a reaction to any of them over many years of use.

I am having a poison oak type reaction to the Vitamin C facial Aveda as well. I find ZAnfel is somewhat helpful.

I asked for a sample of this at a local Aveda salon as I know someone who likes the product. The first night I put it on, I felt a little itchy. The second night, I thought I'd try again, also a little itchy. This morning I came across this blog and know that I will never put this on my skin again. I am wondering if those with nut sensitivities are reacting to the Argan oil.

But then I bought the Green Science cleanser and toner, using them 2x per day. I also developed red bumps and breakouts. I stupidly thought this might be temporary while the products helped clear my skin, but it got worse with more usee. For me it took about a week, but then I had itchy, watery welts, itchy red bumps and very dry skin all around my mouth and chin and cheeks. It has taken 10 days using just Cetaphil and Buts Bees lotions for my skin to calm down, but the dry areas remain. After reading all these comments, I am going back to the salon to ask for money back. The aveda salon should have warned me that so many people react to this product line.

For two nights last week I used the Aveda Green Science firming face creme sample that I got somewhere. The second morning I woke up with a red, bumpy rash on my chest. I started using Cortaid to relieve the pain and itch and tried to figure out what in my environment was the problem. The third morning (had not used the creme again) the rash had spread to my neck and and was creeping up behind my ears. I narrowed down the cause to the creme or a new off brand calcium pill. I stopped the pill and never used the creme after that second day. I started on allergy medicine and continued Cortaid, both of which helped. I looked on the AVEDA website to see what the contents of the firming creme included and saw that they no longer carry it. I then found this website and now see that the creme was definitely the problem. I am throwing it in the trash and will start taking those calcium pills again! Thank you so much for the information.

I am guessing you are allergic to either ginger, caffeine, nuts or shea butter. I wouldn't out the product down due to an allergic reaction because this is a wonderful product. I ALWAYS read the ingredients no matter how long it takes me, before I buy anything I am putting into my body or on my body. I was highly allergic to caffeine and the 7 year thing, I grew out of it. I don't have a reaction now. Although I had anaphylactic shock from chocolate and caffeine back in the day. People who are allergic to caffeine and nuts usually have very intense reactions, I would definitely look into the ingredients and see what it is you are allergic to so this doesn't happen again :( I feel for you, reactions like these are the worst :( - Kimmie*

I am going for a green science facial tomorrow. Is this product still causing problems. Should I cancel or get a different facial?

I think a lot of people on this blog are total attention seekers, really seriously, your reactions were that bad?
Rather than going to a pathetic little blog site, don't you think you should be going to see someone for some legal advice, taking photos of the 'dreadful' reaction and suing?
It seems a little childish just to bad mouth a brand here rather than sorting the issue.
Also.. you have issues with eyes from your face cream, yeah no freaking wonder, it isn't designed for eyes .. duh!
Perhaps aveda.com would be more apt to place your hissy fits on.

If you have a reaction that bad to something stop using it. It's that simple. Don't rule out an entire company and product line because you are allergic to one thing. People are so weird sometimes. You obviously bought the wrong product for your skin type. Would you buy moisturizing shampoo if your hair was oily...no, because that shampoo would make you more oily and probably make you break out due to all the oil, and then you would rule out an entire product line because "all Aveda shampoos are oily and make me breakout". Don't buy products based on aroma, and don't buy products just because one aestician/stylist used it on you, buy products based on what your personal needs are, no one knows your skin/hair better than you do . You'll be pleasantly surprised when you don't break out in rashes from the products your skin-hair-body actually need. Yes, there will be a time here and there that you are allergic to a certain ingredient in a certain product, but hell , just don't use it anymore, but you know what , that product might the lady down the streets favorite product in the whole world , that one product that she just "can't live without" cause it makes her look and feel amazing. All you have to do is silently stop using it , and let her continue to enjoy probably the part of the day she most looks forward to.

Whoever wrote the above two comments is clueless! I am in the midst of allergy testing with 75 patches on my back. I hadn't suspected the Aveda cleanser I use, just because it is well...aveda and I've loved all my aveda stuff! Until now. I had 3 episodes of SEVERE reactions. All I wanted to do was hide or cry and neither were options (crying would only make it worse. I carried on and have had up to three doctor appointments in a week trying to get to the bottom of this. I have cut out just about everything but the aveda cleanser just because it was so low on my list of suspicion. WOW! I have hundreds of dollars in gift certificates for Aveda that I am now way too afraid to use. Seriously, I am afraid of anthing now! I will be the biggest granola girl ever!~ Burning hot rash, swollen eyes with huge bags of fluid underneath, huge hives and after the swelling subsides the texture of sandpaper from tiny scabs where the pustules were. I swear, people looked at me like I had three heads and people at work were asking if I was ok, thinking I'd been crying or beaten up. It hurt so bad. I'd seriously rather live in a bubble for the rest of my life than have a big risk of that happening on a regular basis. Three episodes in 4 weeks and each took about a day to develop and 3-4 to go away after reaching the peak. I do have photos if there were a place to post. Aveda will be hearing from me tomorrow and I'll show the photos to them! Friday I will have my allergy test results and be able to tell them exactly which ingredient thay use is sooooo toxic. OH MY GOD!

As an esthetician who works for an Aveda concept salon/spa, I find this blog and the comments very odd. I have performed this facial so so many times, I use it myself, friends and family use it, and I have never seen or heard of this reaction. BUT, if these are true, you need to look at the ingredients, because it is most likely an allergy to one of those ingredients. I don't think it's fair to write off Aveda products because of an allergy that you have. Obviously when using natural products, there is going to be some allergic reactions, but then, all you have to do is tell the Aveda professional what allergies you have and they will tell you what you can't use. Be smart people, and ranting on a blog probably isn't going to get you anywhere.

I received two facials at the Aveda Salon over the summer and I bought a small 3 pack of cleanser, toner, and lotion. I've never had an allergic reaction to products before, but last night my cheeks broke out in what looked like welts. My face and neck were horribly itchy. A friend gave me 2 Benadryl. I left my meeting early and came home, washed my face with my old cleanser. Today I am still an itchy mess. I am having surgery in 3 days on my neck and I am afraid I will have to cancel it because of this. I threw the Aveda products in the trash, but I am going to pull them out and return to the salon so they know.

Aveda simply changed the name of this product. It is "botanical kinetics" now. I am also not allergic, nor is my daughter, to any of these ingredients. I have allergy tests done once a year because I have severe allergies. My daughter was recently tested also. The ignorant above-mentioned comments, this is for you. Without this blog, every one of us would've thought we just had some freak reaction. Their are absolutely no reviews like this on the aveda website, and why would they allow them to post? I know mine wasn't posted. Thanks to all of the posts on here, and for this blog.

Has anyone received a complete list of what is in the Aveda lotions and creams? I have been using the Botanicals Kinetics Hydrating Lotion for 4 days and now have a severe allergic reaction all over my face and neck. I had to go to the Dr. and she put me on prednisone, Pepcid and Claritin to try to get the rash under control. It's really horrible!

Several years ago, 2008 or 2009 I developed a severe reaction to the Aveda Green Science Firming Cream. My eyes were swollen shut and the sandpaper like rash was incredibly painful on my face and chest. It took three weeks for my skin to heal and the swelling to go away. I had been using the product for three months before the reaction occurred so my doctors and I didn't initially suspect it was the facial cream. I underwent blood tests to rule out other medical conditions and during that time I stopped using the facial cream simply because it was expensive and I was so sick and swollen I didn't want to waste it. When I finally recovered, I was getting ready for an evening out and I applied the cream to my face and almost instantly swelled up and broke out into the rash all over again. I wrote a letter to Aveda, along with a letter from my doctor and copies of all the related medical bills I had incurred. Aveda reimbursed me for every penny of the $650 that I spent diagnosing and treating this problem. I now know to stay clear of the Green Science line but I enjoy Aveda's other products.

I went yesterday to an upscale salon for a massage. Within 10 minutes of getting dressed my arms started itching and I broke out all over with the same red fluid filled bumps you are all talking about. At first I thought it was bug bites but today I had the women at the salon look at it and they all said it was from the Aveda products that a lot of people were getting this. Most of the people were also Gluten intolerant or had Celiac Disease. Since I have a gluten intolerance I thought that was the problem. But after reading your comments I'm realizing it is a plant based allergic reaction which does not surprise me since I have many plant allergies. But it's also left me feeling VERY sick as if I was having a gluten reaction, so now I sit here itching away and in so much pain that all clothing hurts horribly and feeling like I have the worst case of the flu. NEVER AGAIN WILL I GO NEAR ANOTHER AVEDA PRODUCT. I can't believe they don't have warnings and tell the salon people to ask first if the person has plant allergies or problems with Aveda products. How can this company keep their products on the market with so many people getting sick from them?

Can I say that, in as much as I feel awful for everyone here who's had a bad reaction, I am so glad to know what caused my issue.
About two weeks into using the green science products, I began getting a red, scaly rash around my eyes and temples (I used both the eye cream and firming face). I use other Aveda products without issues all the time, and have for years. Now that red rash is peeling/ flaking, and holy itchy-burning! It stinks, and makes me feel so self conscious. 8( I've since switched to Simple products and cetaphil to help the healing process. I'm glad I found this information though, so thank you all for helping to confirm my suspicions.

Same horrible experience! I wish I knew which ingrediant(s) caused the problem so that I could make sure I don't have a repeat experience.

I agree. Green science face wash, toner and moisturizer are perfect for my dry skin. And smells so nice. Now it's discontinued and I'm very sad:( . Wish Aveda would bring it back.

I love it also.
